THE EXPERIENCE
Pantelleria
After your morning espresso, grab the keys to Pantelleria’s favourite car, the iconic Mini Moke, and set off for Montagna Grande, which, as the names suggests, is the island’s highest peak.

Winding along the dramatic coastline you’ll pass fertile volcanic hills embroidered with dry-stone terraces and traditional dwellings known as “dammusi”. Once there, trek through the “Bosco delle Fate” (the Fairy Wood) to the “Grotta dei Briganti” (the Cave of Thieves) where pirates would hide their bounty. Coming back to the foothill of the volcano, do as the locals do and take a therapeutic mud bath in the Specchio di Venere (the island’s heart-shaped lake) and enjoy a refreshing granita made from local prickly pears.

Pantelleria is often best enjoyed from the sea, so hop on board “Esperanza”, Sikelia’s traditional Tunisian fishing vessel. She’s tailor-made for cruises around the island’s pristine coves. A myriad of grottos and inlets await, with waters so mesmerising that the sparkling blue and green hues will tease you to make more of a splash (along with the monk seals and dolphins). For the adventurous, snorkelers and scuba divers will be truly amazed by the rare species of marine life beneath the surface.

Sailing from the port of Scauri to the cove of Cala Levante, on reaching the spectacular stone arch, L’Arco dell’Elefante, the onboard chef will rustle up the catch of the day, with freshly baked focaccia from local artisanal baker “Panettiere Francesco Marrone” and crisp white wine from Sikelia’s own vineyard. For those that prefer lunch on land, head to “La Vela”, an enchanting shabby-chic beach shack perched on the water’s edge. Here, spaghetti with sea urchins is a must. And don’t leave before trying “bacio pantesco”, a local dessert made of ricotta cheese.

Back on Esperanza, visit one of our favourite coves, Cala Cinque Denti, and immerse yourself in the natural thermal pool at Cala Gadir before going to Laghetto delle Ondine, a lake whose remarkable emerald water is a mixture of sea waves and natural spring water. For the grand finale, a swim to the stunning cave of Scarpetta di Cenerentola (appropriately named “Cinderella’s Slipper”) is a must – it is accessible only from the sea and you’ll likely have it all to yourself.

Your odyssey wouldn’t be complete without a sundowner on the wooden deck of L’Officina di Coste Ghirlanda, an enchanting wine bar and restaurant hidden away in Sikelia’s own vineyard. If you ask nicely, you can find out how the zibbibo vines produce Pantelleria’s prized nectars “passito” and “moscato”. Let the sun set, the stars appear, and stay for dinner by candlelight as you reflect on the wonders of this Tyrrhenian island.
